Springfield Salvation Army to relocate service facility

Salvationarmy

Springfield Mayor James Langfelder said recently that a new Salvation Army facility will open at 16oo E. Clear Lake Ave.

Formerly, this location housed a Gold’s Gym.

“This truly is an example of how Springfield can grow and prosper via effective public and private partnerships," Langfelder said.
"Thanks to the leadership of the Salvation Army administration, the City of Springfield, Sangamon Count and Illini Bank, I believe what is best for the Salvation Army and our community it serves truly prevailed."

The Salvation Army was in the process of beginning renovations at its current location at 100 N. Ninth Street. With this relocation, the Salvation Army aims to speed up the process of opening a shelter before the winter season this year. This project depends on the sale of its current location and additional support from Springfield and Sangamon County.

Major Steven Woodard of the Salvation Army said the facility will support the organization’s plans to expand services in Springfield.

"The new facility allows the Salvation Army to move its programs and services that are currently in transition, such as emergency services and shelter, to a possible future community center," Woodard said. "In addition to shelter services, the facility will enable The Salvation Army to provide the existing services to this community as it has for the last 130 years including food, utility assistance, prescriptions for seniors, emergency transportation, emergency housing, emergency disaster services, as well as character development programs for men, women and youth."
