House Democrats would rather spend $60 million to pay for abortions than work toward fixing the financial troubles of Illinoisans, Demetra Demonte, national committeewoman for the lllinois Republican Party, said recently, according to a press release.
Demonte was decrying the House passage of HB40, which would provide taxpayer funding for some abortions. The bill would expand state employee health insurance and Medicaid coverage to include abortion procedures in an effort designed to counter a possible overturning of Roe v. Wade at the federal level.
Although the measure passed the House in April and the Senate a month later, it has yet to be sent to Gov. Bruce Rauner. Rauner has vowed to veto it if it arrives on his desk.
"Instead of working to solve our state's catastrophic challenges, Madigan Democrats just passed a radical bill for taxpayer-funded abortions, at a cost of $60 million, while we don't have a budget,” Demonte said. “Springfield yet again shows it's tone-deaf to the concerns of Illinoisans."
