The Illinois Republican Party is releasing a series of digital attacks on House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) for what the group describes as his failure to enact reforms and his work to make Illinoisans pay even more taxes.
The ads follow the passage of a budget package that raises the personal income tax rate to 4.95 percent from 3.75 percent without enacting any of the reforms Gov. Bruce Rauner had demanded.
The series criticizes Madigan's long history in the General Assembly and the state’s worsening fiscal health during his tenure. It will also cover the new budget, particularly the tax hike.

“For four decades, Mike Madigan has stood in the way, willing to put power over compromise, politics over progress,” one ad's voiceover says. “Willing to let kids, schools and social services suffer. After 16 years without a balanced budget, and now a 32 percent tax hike with no real reforms, Mike Madigan’s passing the buck yet again. No balanced budget, no plan for reform or long-term fixes. Tell Madigan: Tax hikes without reform won’t work.”
