Downtown Springfield could start seeing more students from the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) and Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) thanks to a newly introduced discount program, according to Rep. Sara Wojcicki Jimenez's (R-Leland Grove) website.

Wojcicki Jimenez explained the origins of the discount program, which was proposed by the UIS and LLCC students who serve on her higher education committee.

“[The committee was] talking to me about how can they get UIS students and Licoln Land students better connected with downtown Springfield, because both campuses are a little off the beaten path,” Wojcicki Jimenez said, according to a video of the program launch. “One of the ideas that came from them was [talking] to the businesses about a discount program… . They’ve talked to businesses and really have put the plan into action.”

The discount program allows students from both institutions to receive discounts when they present their student identification cards to participating outlets, which are designated with decals in their shop windows. Typical discounts include 10 percent off purchases, buy one get one free offers and special coupons.

“We’re very happy that the representative has been a great ally to students, being able to talk to us about whatever issues we have and make state government work for us,” UIS junior Kaelan Smith said at the launch.
