Senator Bennett, along with other Illinois Senate Republicans, recently raised concerns about a proposed funding formula for the state’s higher education system. During a press conference, they highlighted elements of the formula that base funding on a student’s race, which they believe could be unconstitutional. The Senators emphasized that such a plan could violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and jeopardize federal funding for schools. They pointed to the University of Illinois as an example of the potential consequences, with over $750 million in funding at stake.

Furthermore, the Republican lawmakers expressed worries about the lack of consideration for factors such as the cost of operating medical schools, graduate programs, and deferred maintenance in the proposed formula. They also noted that the formula, attributed to the Illinois Commission on Equitable Public University Funding, was never voted on by the full Commission and did not represent the consensus of its members.

Senator Bennett stressed the importance of proper vetting and transparency in the development of a stable and equitable funding formula for higher education. He aims to ensure that the proposed formula undergoes thorough scrutiny before potentially becoming law.

In another news event, Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day saw hundreds of supporters of the Second Amendment rallying at the Statehouse in Springfield. The event brought together gun owners, advocates, and lawmakers to uphold constitutional rights and discuss legislative issues related to the Second Amendment. Senator Bennett emphasized the significance of the event in light of ongoing attempts to erode law-abiding citizens' constitutional rights.

Lastly, the State of Illinois currently owes $1,589,211,473.76 to state vendors, with over 15,000 pending vouchers. This amount reflects bills awaiting payment and does not include estimated debts like the unfunded pension liability, which has been projected to exceed $139 billion.

On a lighter note, a mining truck manufactured by Komatsu was recently named the "coolest thing made in Illinois" in the 2024 Makers Madness contest. The truck, with a hauling capacity of up to 400 tons and featuring cutting-edge technology, emerged victorious among over 200 entries. Three other finalists were also recognized for their innovative products.
