State Representative Mike Coffey recently discussed several pieces of legislation he has filed in the Illinois General Assembly, all aimed at improving the lives of residents in the state.

Coffey emphasized the importance of his role as a representative for the 95th District, stating, "I believe it’s my duty to work for my constituents and bring forth meaningful legislation that improves the quality of life for everyone in Illinois."

One of the bills he filed, HB4734, focuses on extending deadlines for reduced or zero carbon dioxide emissions. Coffey explained that this legislation is crucial in light of the impending closure of the Kincaid coal-fired power plant, highlighting the need for reliable and affordable energy sources in the state.

In another initiative, Coffey introduced HB4735, which seeks to increase transparency in the General Assembly by restricting legislative business hours to a more reasonable timeframe. He stressed the importance of conducting government affairs during hours when the public can actively engage and participate, stating, "Passing a massive budget at 3:00 a.m. while everyone is asleep only causes people to lose trust in their government."

Additionally, Coffey filed HB4733 to expand scholarships to children of veterans who served during the invasion of Panama. He expressed his deep respect for the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families, highlighting the importance of supporting them through initiatives like this scholarship program.

Furthermore, Coffey addressed the issue of the potential closure of the USPS Springfield Processing and Distribution Center with HR0691. He urged Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to reconsider the decision, emphasizing the impact it would have on workers and communities in Illinois.

Lastly, Coffey proposed HR0594 to amend House Rules and enhance transparency within the General Assembly. He emphasized the importance of allowing all representatives, regardless of party affiliation, to have their bills called for a vote, promoting a more balanced and honest legislative process.

In conclusion, Coffey's legislative efforts reflect his commitment to serving the best interests of Illinois residents and ensuring transparency and accountability in government proceedings.
