Charlie Meier, a state representative from Okawville, highlighted on April 6 the importance of youth agricultural organizations during Illinois Agriculture Legislative Day in Springfield. Meier said his experiences with FFA and 4-H as a young person played a key role in his path to becoming a legislator.
The event brought together nearly 50 agricultural organizations and about 600 FFA members and their advisers. The students delivered boxed lunches and baskets filled with Illinois-produced goods to lawmakers, aiming to showcase the diversity of agriculture in the state.
Meier said, “I love Illinois Agriculture Legislative Day in Springfield. I love seeing all the FFA and 4-H kids. Without those two organizations, I wouldn’t be a state rep.” He added, “I have no college education. I had a herd of dairy cows that I wanted to milk. In my senior year of high school, I had band, P.E. and ag in the morning and I was on the tractor by 11:30 every day growing up and somehow I’ve ended up a state rep.”
Meier is one of only a few legislators with an agricultural background who attended this year’s event. He met with students from various schools but noted that visits from Okawville FFA were particularly meaningful since it is his alma mater.
Meier was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 109th House District in 2023 after replacing David Reis, according to AgriNews.
The annual legislative day aims to connect lawmakers directly with young people involved in agriculture while emphasizing the sector’s significance across Illinois.
