Illinois State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) visited the Motherland Gardens Community Project in Springfield this week. The organization, founded by Yves Doumen, who is also a member of the Illinois National Guard, hosted a legislative farm tour for attendees.

Motherland Gardens is a non-profit urban farm focused on addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable agriculture in Springfield’s east-side neighborhood. During the visit, Coffey and others discussed the challenges posed by urban blight and explored how neglected spaces can be transformed into productive farms to benefit local communities.

Coffey noted his interest in learning about the organization’s work and discussed ways state government could support efforts to inspire youth and encourage community engagement in urban agriculture and entrepreneurship. He said, “We share the same vision for Springfield, and that is to create a thriving community where everyone can live an active and healthy life.”

Coffey was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 95th House District in 2023, succeeding Tim Butler.
