Cougars Bow Out of of 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships
SIUE wrestling’s run at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships came to close late Friday evening.
SIUE’s Colton McKiernan was defeated by MIssouri’s Zach Elam as both were looking to gain All-American status. Elam defeated McKiernan 11-5. McKIernan had earned a right to the match earlier in the day with a 2-0 win over Penn’s Ben Goldin and a 2-1 victory over Tyrell Gordon of Northern Iowa in the consolation bracket. McKiernan completed the season with a 30-5 record.
Both Saul Ervin and Caleb Tyus bowed out of the Championships. Ervin dropped a 3-2 decision to South Dakota State’s Clay Carlson. Tyus was defeated by MInnesota’s Michael Blockhaus 9-6.
“All three did great during the season,” said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. “Obviously being here at the tournament and all winning a match is big.”
Spates also said he will miss the senior leadership of McKiernan and Ervin.
“They have been leaders on this team for a long time,” said Spates. “We’re going to miss having them around, but it was a good way to send them out at the NCAA Tournament.”
