Sheriff Paula Crouch and the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office hosted a ceremony to welcome the Flag Sojourn 250 as it made its way through Sangamon County. The event is part of a nationwide initiative by the National Flag Foundation, which is sending a single American flag to every U.S. cemetery overseas, each U.S. territory, and all 50 states in advance of the country’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026.

The flag has already visited all 26 overseas U.S. cemeteries and more than 20 states. During the ceremony, an honor guard from the sheriff’s office entered with the folded flag and presented it to Sheriff Crouch.

In her remarks, Sheriff Crouch said: “the flag’s journey is intended to bring Americans together and recognize the nation’s history, its heroes and its future.” She described the American flag as “a symbol of freedom that represents the sacrifices and ideals that unite the country.” She also expressed gratitude for those who serve in uniform, in their communities, and in support of their families.

At the end of the event, Sheriff Crouch handed over the flag to Jim Kaitschuk, executive director of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association. The flag arrived in Illinois from Michigan and will continue next to Wisconsin.

Sangamon County noted its pride in being one of the stops on this journey ahead of America’s upcoming milestone anniversary.

In addition to community events like this one, Sangamon County schools have reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of 14-to-1 during the 2022-23 school year. Teacher absenteeism for that year was recorded at 34.1%, slightly below Illinois’ average (https://www.isbe.net/Pages/Home.aspx). Among local schools, Glenwood High School had both the highest enrollment of white students at 1,124 and Hispanic students at 78; Springfield Southeast High School recorded the highest enrollment of Black students with 671; while Springfield High School had the largest number of multiracial students at 144 (https://www.isbe.net/Pages/Home.aspx).
