FOIA Request to Illinois Department of Corrections Regarding State Agency Contracts with Vendors on March 24, 2025.
As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in government affairs, Sangamon Sun has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Illinois Department of Corrections. Our request seeks comprehensive documentation and details concerning the fulfillment of contractual obligations for all contracts executed or modified between this state agency and their vendors during January of the 2023 fiscal year.
We are specifically interested in records that verify the scope of work performed, deliverables completed, and any reports or evaluations related to these contracts. Access to such public records is crucial for us as a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In our capacity as members of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy—a non-profit organization assisting news media companies and advocacy groups—we leverage Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws to shed light on government actions. This request aligns with our mission to inform the American electorate by pulling back the curtain on governmental operations.
We have also requested a fee waiver, given our role in disseminating information as media professionals. We believe this waiver is justified under the provisions that support media access to public records for reporting purposes.
