Area high school students recently had the opportunity to explore potential careers in healthcare through a bootcamp at HSHS St. John’s Hospital. The High School Healthcare Bootcamp offered participants hands-on experiences, such as observing surgeries and learning CPR.

Ericka Mulroy, Nursing Professional Development Specialist for Hospital Sisters Health System, emphasized the value of this experience: “It’s one thing to read about health care in a textbook or to see your parents leave for their shift at the hospital each morning, but seeing it in person brings the career to life. Many of these students will remember this experience for years to come.” She added that the bootcamps allow students to explore various healthcare career options and interact with professionals in the field.

Students had the option to shadow professionals in three different departments from a list that included areas like Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Emergency Department, Laboratory, and more.

The 17 participating students came from several local high schools including Argenta-Oreana High School, Gillespie High School, Glenwood High School, among others.

The program is funded by HSHS St. John’s Foundation and is free for participants. Although applications are closed for this summer’s remaining sessions, additional camps are planned for fall and winter. Interested individuals can follow updates on Facebook at @StJohnsSpringfield or visit HSHS’s website for more information on student opportunities.
