Illinois College ended its National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) Valorant season on Mar. 17 with a narrow 0-2 defeat against Bowling Green State University, as reported by the team. The match was closely contested, with both maps decided by only a few rounds.
The outcome is significant for Illinois College Blue Boys and Lady Blues Esports, who have been active participants in intercollegiate esports competitions and have previously achieved notable successes in other games. According to the official website, the program has competed in the National Esports Collegiate Conference and reached the Grand Finals in Rocket League.
In the first game on Bind, Illinois College kept pace with Bowling Green throughout but ultimately lost 14-12 after several traded rounds. The second map on Pearl followed a similar pattern, ending 13-11 in favor of Bowling Green despite a late push from Illinois College.
Fray Moulton led Illinois College with 49 kills, posting a 1.87 KDA and an average combat score (ACS) of 330. Thomas Peña contributed significantly as well, recording 45 kills, 12 assists, and a team-high ACS of 353 along with 12 first bloods. Dwight Duijneveld added 36 kills and 11 assists; Ekko Nguyen provided support with 20 assists and four spike plants; Carter Naeve finished with ten spike plants and eight assists.
The Illinois College Blue Boys and Lady Blues Esports compete under Illinois College athletics using the Blueboys nickname for men’s teams according to the official website. The program operates out of Jacksonville, Illinois according to the official website.
Beyond Valorant, the team has earned recognition for advancing to Grand Finals in Rocket League according to the official website and secured the Division III Midwest Championship in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate according to the official website.
With this series marking the end of their NECC Valorant campaign, Illinois College looks ahead to future competitions across multiple esports titles.
