Illinois State Representative Mike Coffey said on Apr. 16 that Illinois experienced the third largest loss of resident income through moves to other states in 2023, according to data from the Internal Revenue Service. Coffey described this trend as a significant problem for the state.
Coffey said high costs of living driven by public policy are causing many residents to seek more affordable places to live. He called for immediate relief measures, saying these steps are necessary to encourage investment and growth within Illinois.
In his statement, Coffey said, “The population decline in our state is caused by high taxes, corruption, and burdensome regulations and all these issues drive people to more friendly states.” He added that Republican lawmakers have proposed legislation aimed at improving conditions in Illinois but said Democrats prioritize other spending projects and tax increases.
Coffey was elected as a Republican representative to the Illinois State House in 2023 for the state’s 95th House District, replacing Tim Butler according to available records.
The issue of population decline has been highlighted as a major concern for policymakers and could impact future economic growth if not addressed.
