At a time when Illinois families are grappling with inflation and rising costs, a $6 billion tax hike is being proposed by Democrats in Springfield to support Governor JB Pritzker’s state budget. This proposal represents a 37% increase in state spending since Pritzker took office, amounting to roughly $15 billion. The tax plan includes new taxes on digital advertising, capital gains, corporate income, and an increased estate tax. These taxes could impact small businesses and family farms and might be passed on to consumers as higher prices.

State Senator Sally Turner criticized the plan, stating it could lead to more government dependency and fewer jobs. Illinois already has the highest overall tax burden in the country, yet Democrat leaders are seeking more revenue.

In other news, firefighters were honored at the 32nd Annual Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Firefighter Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony on May 13. Captain Derek Strohl from Buffalo Fire Protection District received the Firefighter Excellence Award for his service. State Senator Sally Turner highlighted the event as a reminder of firefighters’ courage and dedication.

Senate Republicans opposed Senate Bill 1298, which expands SNAP benefits for college students by reclassifying all public college programs as equivalent to SNAP Employment and Training programs starting March 1, 2028. State Senator Sally Turner argued this overextends SNAP’s intent and increases state spending without proper funding.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is offering $400 million for local transportation projects aimed at improving roads, transit, and pedestrian access. Cities can apply for funding until June 1, 2025. IDOT will host conferences to guide applicants through available funding programs.

Lastly, Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day (IGOLD) saw supporters march on the State Capitol advocating for Second Amendment rights. Organized by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA), IGOLD remains a prominent event defending constitutional rights related to gun ownership.
