Governor J.B. Pritzker’s spending plan, which includes nearly one billion dollars in tax increases and financial maneuvers, passed the General Assembly on May 31. If signed into law, it will become Illinois’ largest budget in history, exceeding fifty-five billion dollars. This represents an increase of nearly fifteen billion dollars since Governor Pritzker took office.
State Senator Sally Turner opposed the proposal, stating it prioritizes government growth over working families. The budget introduces new taxes on vacation rentals like Airbnb, gaming, phone services, nicotine products, and businesses. Additionally, Democrats used approximately $400 million in one-time revenue strategies to balance the budget.
Republican lawmakers managed to block several proposed tax hikes but warned these ideas might resurface. One blocked proposal was a $1.50 delivery tax on packages shipped to Illinois homes, which would have affected those relying on deliveries for essentials. Another measure sought to impose a service tax on car repairs and home maintenance, while a third aimed at digital advertising costs for small businesses.
Lawmakers opposing these proposals argue that if they return, they will burden working families and seniors already struggling financially.
In other news, State Senator Sally Turner is collaborating with the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office for an unclaimed property event in Forsyth. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Forsyth Public Library.
