Illinois lawmaker criticizes new tax hikes impacting families and businesses

State Representative Martin McLaughlin has criticized the recent tax increases in Illinois, which are set to take effect on July 1. These changes come after Governor JB Pritzker approved the Democrats’ Fiscal Year 2026 state budget, marking it as the largest spending plan in the state’s history.

McLaughlin described the budget as a significant burden on families, job creators, and workers throughout Illinois. He stated, “Democrats never miss an opportunity to take more of your money. This budget raises taxes on the things people use every day—gasoline, phones, internet, and even short weekend trips.”

One of McLaughlin’s primary concerns is the increase in the Motor Fuel Tax. He remarked that raising diesel prices would have widespread negative effects: “The idea that we can raise diesel prices and it’s not going to have an impact on families and consumers is ridiculous. It’s going to cause more inflation and higher prices for everyone across the board and it’s incredibly anti-business.”

He emphasized that diesel fuel is essential for delivering goods by rail or truck to homes and businesses. McLaughlin suggested reconsidering energy policies with an awareness of taxpayers’ financial limits: “I think we need to rethink our energy policy with the understanding that Illinois taxpayers are tapped out.”
