Pelican Intl Inc. announced on March 23 the acquisition of The KL Companies, Inc. (KL Outdoor) based in Muskegon, Michigan, as part of its strategy to strengthen its position as a leading paddlesports provider in North America.

The move is significant for both companies and the broader outdoor equipment market, as it combines two complementary brand portfolios and manufacturing capabilities. This integration aims to create a cross-border platform that will support long-term growth and offer products across all price tiers.

Danick Lavoie, President and CEO of Pelican Intl Inc., said, “This acquisition is a key step in executing our long-term vision. Our success is built on the dedication and skill of our people, and we are proud to welcome the KL Outdoor team. Together, we are creating more than just scale—we are strengthening our footprint that allows us to consolidate our leadership in paddlesports and accelerate our expansion into new outdoor categories. We are now positioned to deliver unmatched choice and value through an integrated manufacturing network spanning the US and Canada.” Dave Baun, Vice President and General Manager of KL Outdoor, said, “Joining Pelican marks an exciting new chapter for our team. Our Michigan team’s dedication lives on, and together, we are part of a stronger organization with the scale to grow the category and create lasting value.”

With over 550 employees after this acquisition—including advanced extrusion, thermoformed, and rotomolded manufacturing facilities—Pelican expands its operations into Michigan alongside existing sites in Québec and South Carolina. The company says this expanded footprint will allow for greater supply chain resilience and faster fulfillment.

Founded in Laval, Québec in 1968 according to information provided by Pelican Intl Inc., Pelican delivers brands such as Pelican, Catch, Wilderness Systems, Perception, Dagger, Sun Dolphin (a KL Outdoor brand), Evoke (a KL Outdoor brand), and Outta Site (a KL Outdoor brand) across North America.
