State Representative Mike Coffey announced on April 29 the grand opening of Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe in Springfield. The event marked a significant milestone for the 95th District and for Illinois, with community members gathering to celebrate the new sports facility.
The park features what is described as the largest air-supported sports dome in the world, along with several outdoor facilities designed for athletes. It is expected to become a year-round center for athletics, entertainment, and community activities.
Coffey said, “Today is not just a ribbon cutting, it’s a statement reflecting the commitment from community leaders and stakeholders working together to shape the city of Springfield into a destination to visit for families across the country.”
Coffey was elected as a Republican representative to Illinois’ 95th House District in 2023, succeeding Tim Butler according to Ballotpedia. The district includes parts of Sangamon County—covering portions of Springfield as well as Chatham and Rochester—and also extends into Macon and Christian Counties.
As Scheels Sports Park opens its doors, local officials expect it will bring increased opportunities for athletic events and tourism throughout central Illinois.
