There have been 48,526 confirmed coronavirus cases in Sangamon County as of Jan. 21, with 333 deaths linked to the virus, according to data from the state Department of Public Health (IDPH).

Chicago (526,927 cases) and Cook County (516,581 cases) posted the highest numbers statewide. Chicago’s death toll from the virus stands at 6,718, while Cook County recorded 6,128 deaths, according to the IDPH.

Illinois residents who have been tested for COVID-19 now number 49,488,107, the department reported. And the age group with the most confirmed cases was under 20, with 604,998 people in the age group testing positive for the virus.

Among all those testing positive in Illinois, 1,290,742 were male and 1,440,858 were female, the IDPH said. Male deaths linked to coronavirus numbered 16,265, while female deaths stood at 13,580.

Broken down according to race, the fatalities consisted of 18,638 whites, 5,454 African-Americans, 4,299 Hispanics, 952 Asians, and 502 belonging to other races or who did not provide their ethnicity before they died.
