State Representative Martin McLaughlin (R-Barrington Hills) has voiced opposition to a new energy bill backed by Democrats, arguing that it will lead to higher utility costs for Illinois residents and businesses. Speaking on the House floor, McLaughlin referenced previous controversies involving Democratic lawmakers and energy companies, noting that former Speaker Mike Madigan and a top energy executive were recently sentenced to prison.
“Please, Democrats, stop ‘helping’ utility payers across the state of Illinois — they can’t afford any more of your expensive help,” said Rep. McLaughlin. “Ronald Reagan said it best: the scariest thing to hear from politicians is, ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’”
McLaughlin acknowledged the importance of clean energy goals but argued that current policies do not support advancements in next-generation technologies. He stated, “they’re cleaning all the green out of middle-class and lower-income families’ wallets.”
He also highlighted his previous bipartisan work on legislation aimed at keeping Illinois nuclear plants open. McLaughlin continues to advocate for nuclear and clean fossil fuel technologies as a way to make energy more affordable and attract businesses to Illinois.
McLaughlin was elected as a Republican representative for the 52nd District in 2021, succeeding David McSweeney. The district covers parts of Lake, Cook, Kane, and McHenry Counties.
