Illinois State Representative Mike Coffey has expressed criticism following the conclusion of the recent Veto Session, which ended at 4:00 a.m. Coffey stated his concerns regarding several bills passed by Illinois House Democrats during the session, particularly those he believes will increase taxes on residents.
"Well, I can’t say I’m surprised that Illinois House Democrats passed several bad bills until 4:00 AM that will raise taxes on hardworking Illinois families. From expanding sanctuary state policies to passing $2.5 billion in new spending for mass transit (Sweeping Road Funds), one thing is clear- our last day in Veto Session was a complete insult to every Illinois taxpayer," Coffey said.
Coffey also addressed measures that he claims could impact businesses in the state. "Additionally, Democrats supported decoupling Illinois from the federal tax code which will result in tax increase for Illinois businesses."
He added his disappointment with how legislative proceedings were conducted. "This Veto Session was very expensive for taxpayers and I’m appalled by how the state of Illinois conducts business. At what point does accountability come into play?"
Representative Coffey is a Republican who began serving in the Illinois State House in 2023, representing the state's 95th District after succeeding Tim Butler.
The legislative session included debates and votes on issues such as energy costs, toll road and sales tax increases for Chicago-area transit funding, and a right-to-die bill.
