November 10, 2025, marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps. The day commemorates the establishment of the Marine Corps in 1775, when a committee from the Second Continental Congress called for two battalions of Marines to support naval forces during the Revolutionary War. This decision was made in Philadelphia and led to the creation of what is now recognized as one of the world's leading military branches.

Initially formed to work alongside the Navy, the Marine Corps evolved into an independent force known for rapid deployment and specialized combat operations. By the twentieth century, Marines were conducting their own missions, including expeditionary and urban warfare.

The reputation of Marines grew significantly during World War I, particularly at Belleau Wood in France. German soldiers referred to them as “Teufel hunden” or “Devil Dogs,” a nickname that remains associated with the branch. During this battle, Captain Lloyd Williams famously responded to a suggestion to retreat by saying: “Retreat, hell! We just got here!”

Marines have played significant roles in most American conflicts. Their actions during World War II’s Pacific campaign—at Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa—are especially notable. The image of Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima has become an enduring symbol and is featured at the Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.

Today, Marines perform a wide range of tasks beyond combat operations. They provide humanitarian aid after disasters, evacuate U.S. citizens from dangerous areas, and secure more than 180 embassies worldwide. The Marine Corps also supports counter-narcotics and anti-trafficking efforts through partnerships with government agencies.

State Representative Mike Coffey has introduced House Bill 3208 requiring school boards to invite armed forces recruitment representatives for annual events. Coffey explained his motivation: “I believe every student should learn about the benefits that come from joining the military,” Coffey said. “Enlisting in the armed forces is not for everyone, but providing students with information and available options after graduating high school can help them in making a decision.”

Coffey was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 95th House District in 2023, succeeding Tim Butler.

As Americans observe this milestone anniversary for the Marine Corps, attention is drawn to its ongoing contributions and sacrifices over two-and-a-half centuries. The branch’s motto remains “Semper Fidelis,” meaning “always faithful.” On November 10th, many will honor those who have served under this banner both at home and abroad.
