The Board of Education of the Ball-Chatham Community Unit District No. 5 in Chatham, Illinois has expelled two students.
The actions were disclosed during a recent special board meeting.
Both students, who were referred to as Student A and B respectively to preserve anonymity, were expelled for the remainder of 2015-16 school year and through the first semester of 2017-18 school year.
Student B would be able to reapply for admission to the school in the fall semester of the 2017-18 school year, assuming that requirements are met in the district’s Safe Schools Program. Both students are required to attend the Sangamon County Safe Schools Program; in order to be enrolled there both students will need to follow attendance and disciplinary guidelines and to keep grades up to a certain point. Failure in any of these areas will result in a permanent expulsion.
Both students were found to have committed acts of "severe gross misconduct" by the district.
Both expulsions were approved in a unanimous fashion.
