City of Atlanta issued the following announcement on Nov. 15.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia Byung J. “BJay” Pak, will host federal and local officials at the world’s busiest and most efficient airport this week to prepare passengers for a likely record-setting travel season. More than 3 million passengers are expected to travel through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) during the Thanksgiving period between Friday, November 16 and Monday, November 26. Additionally, airline forecasts predict ATL’s one-day screening record of more than 93,000 passengers set this past Memorial Day holiday will be surpassed Sunday, November 25.
Mayor Bottoms and ATL leaders will discuss Airport efforts to ease congestion and facilitate passenger travel during the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Attorney Pak will remind passengers to carefully check carry-on baggage when preparing for travel. He will also call attention to the number of illegal firearms passengers are attempting to carry through security checkpoints at ATL.
As of November 13, nearly 300 such incidents have been reported, causing increased security wait times for all passengers and substantial penalties for offenders.
Notes to media: The media parking lot is located outside of the exit booth of the North Hourly Lot – closed during the North Canopy construction period – is now open.
