Central Illinois nursing home workers threaten strike due to COVID-19 conditions

In Central Illinois, the staffs at two local nursing homes planned to strike in early May.

According to News Channel 20, Aperion care facilities in Springfield and Jacksonville planned to go on strike over wages and safety of workers. 

Unless an agreement is made with management, these two facilities along with 38 others were going to go out on protest. 

Workers in the union are claiming that management are risking workers' health and safety by refusing to supply personal protective equipment for employees, according to News Channel 20. Workers are also claiming acceptable paid time off for COVID-19 or a similar illness isn't provided. 

Members of the union are asking for a one-year contract that would give them $15 per hour and 50% hazard pay bonus during the coronavirus pandemic, according to News Channel 20. 

Workers are also asking for 80 additional paid sick leave hours, which would help protect employees and their families from the coronaviurs, according to News Channel 20.
