St. John's Hospital Springfield Illinois issued the following announcement on July 3.
HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital received $10,000 for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) through the Pampers Bright Beginnings NICU Technology Grant.
St. John’s was one of 15 hospitals selected in the U.S. to receive the grant; and the only hospital in downstate Illinois. The grant money will be used to purchase iPads for the patient areas to help connect parents with their baby during times when they cannot be there in person. With the average length of stay in the St. John’s NICU being 25 days, it is important to provide as much connection as possible between the parents and baby.
To help uplift parents and support them, Pampers launched a grant program that supplied 15 hospitals across the nation with technology grants, which enables further connectivity solutions like iPads to keep families connected even when they're not physically together. This way parents can talk, read, and sing to their babies every day.
“We are so thrilled to receive the Pampers Bright Beginnings NICU Technology Grant for our NICU,” said Diedra Stewart, NICU nurse manager. “Parents want to be with their baby the entire time, but that is extremely difficult for them when other life events and responsibilities happen. These iPads will be a great way for the nurses to help connect parents with their babies.”
The NICU is currently being expanded and updated to provide single family patient rooms for the first time in St. John’s 78-year history of caring for premature and critically-ill infants.
Each year, approximately 2,000 babies are born at St. John’s Children’s Hospital. The St. John’s NICU cares for approximately 700 babies annually over a 35-county area.
The NICU project is the centerpiece of hospital-wide fundraising campaign, Imagine Tomorrow, which is raising money in support of patient care, education and research. The HSHS St. John’s Foundation is continuing to raise money toward the NICU project.
