A perennial candidate lost the Springfield School District 186 school board election to a political newbie.
Tom Shafer vied for the position against Michael L. Washington and Erica Austin, but Ohio doctoral student Austin won the race.
Shafer believes that all students should return to school as soon as possible under safe conditions stating that "children do not seem to spread this disease."
According to Sangamon Sun, he also said that the district may want to weigh the possibility of “a contract clause that would give an incentive to minority teachers to begin their teaching career in Springfield."
Shafer, a former fighter, also ran in the Springfield School District 186, District 6 General Election in 2017 but lost to Judith Johnson, and in Springfield Public School Board for sub-district 7 in 2013.
He also ran for a Ward 2 Alderman seat in 2019 and for Sangamon County coroner in 2012.
The school board members who won the election will be seated for a two-year term.
