St. John's Hospital Springfield Illinois issued the following announcement on Apr. 13.
Some people find it easy to bring compassion to the suffering of others, but difficult to bring that same caring to themselves. Studies show that self compassion:
• Reduces self criticism.
• Lowers stress hormones like cortisol.
• Increases self-soothing, self-encouragement and other aspects of resilience.
• Helps heal any shortages of caring from others that occurred in childhood.
The retreat will support participants in cultivating the practice of mindfulness through guided meditations, personal reflection, writing exercises and group discussion.
Please dress in loose, comfortable layers. Bring a pillow and either a yoga/exercise mat or blanket for meditation done on the floor. These activities also can be adapted to sitting in a chair.
