Long haul: longest wait for Elkhart inventor’s patents approved in week ending Aug. 14

Patent 4

The longest time between a patent being filed and granted in the week ending Aug. 14 in Elkhart was 1,023 days, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent application was filed by Lippert Components, Inc. for a vehicle having a bed lift in a corner. It was filed on Oct. 22, 2018 before being approved on Aug. 10, 2021.

Though patents are required for inventions and products, the granting of a patent is not a guarantee for success. Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship said roughly 50 percent of patents expire prematurely due to costs.

There were three patents granted for Elkhart inventors in the week ending Aug. 14.
