SIU’s STEM conference for girls restarts

Girls in grades 5-9 can once again explore careers in science and mathematics during an event at Southern Illinois University Carbondale this November.

Registration is now open for the 2022 Expanding Your Horizons conference, set for Nov. 5 at the SIU Student Center and other areas on campus.

Workshops, networking and other events

The annual event, restarted after a two-year hiatus due to COVID, provides workshops, networking and hands-on experiences aimed at increasing girls’ awareness of careers in such areas as science, technology, engineering, math and more.

The event also provides participants with opportunities to meet and interact with role models who are active in math- and science-related careers.

Registration required, open now

Organizers hope for many participants to attend the event, along with teachers and parents from throughout Southern Illinois. Advance registration is required, and the cost is $10 if done before Oct. 7. Registration Oct. 8-21 is $17, with no spaces guaranteed after that date.

Mail-in registrations are also accepted. All fees, checks or money orders must be mailed to SIU Carbondale-Mathematics, Expanding Your Horizons, 1245 Lincoln Drive, Mail code 4408, Carbondale, IL 62901.

Experts help with many topics

The workshop includes topics such as aviation, geology, biological sciences, chemistry, psychology, mathematics, engineering and technology, medicine and zoology. Students can participate in three areas of their greatest interest.

The conference also will feature more than 20 professionals donating their time to lead workshops. The workshops will focus on career exploration and provide opportunities for participants to have positive experiences with math and science.
