On this Veterans Day, it is important to take a moment to honor and remember the brave men and women who have answered the call to protect the freedom of our nation. We express our gratitude to all veterans in the United States armed forces for their dedicated service to America.
Throughout history, more than 41 million Americans have served in our nation's military. From the Revolutionary War to the present day, our veterans have played a vital role in defending and upholding the values and ideals of our founding fathers. The Continental Army, formed in 1775 under the command of George Washington, marked the beginning of our long and proud military tradition.
Over the years, the United States has been involved in numerous conflicts and declared war 11 times. Our veterans have fought bravely and selflessly in these conflicts, both at home and abroad, to protect our nation, save lives, and liberate the oppressed. On this Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the generations of courageous men and women who have served in the military.
The stories of our veterans are a source of inspiration and wisdom. They teach us about purpose, leadership, work ethic, and community. These stories should not be confined to a single day in November. The Illinois Veteran's Project, an initiative by the Illinois State Library, aims to capture and preserve the names and stories of Illinois men and women who have served in the armed services. This project ensures that their contributions will never be forgotten.
In addition, we must recognize the valuable experience that veterans bring to their roles outside of the military. Six current House Republican legislators in Illinois have served in the U.S. Military. Their firsthand knowledge and understanding of the sacrifices made by our armed forces inform their work in the Illinois General Assembly.
On this Veterans Day, let us remember and honor the sacrifices made by our veterans. Their unwavering commitment to our nation deserves our utmost respect and gratitude. Today and every day, we express our heartfelt thanks to all veterans for their service.
