The FBI office in Springfield, Illinois has issued a warning to residents of the state regarding the increase in scams during the holiday season. This includes a specific emphasis on charity fraud, as scammers are becoming more sophisticated in their methods.

According to the FBI's internet crime report for 2022, over 14,000 Illinois residents fell victim to scams, resulting in a staggering loss of approximately $266 million. These numbers place Illinois as the fifth state with the highest number of scam victims.

Among the scams to watch out for are those that circulate on social media platforms. These posts may offer gift cards or vouchers disguised as holiday promotions or surveys shared by friends. However, their true purpose is to steal personal information. It is essential to be cautious and skeptical when encountering these types of offers.

Mobile apps, often disguised as games, can also pose a threat to personal information. Consumers are advised to research the company behind the app and check third-party reviews before downloading or using them.

In addition to these scams, residents should remain vigilant against non-payment/non-delivery scams, investment scams, work-from-home scams, gift card scams, and charity scams. These fraudulent activities often accept payments through non-traditional means, further complicating the detection and prevention process.

To protect personal information, the FBI recommends several measures. First, it is crucial to ensure that online purchases are made from reputable sources. Regularly checking credit card statements for any suspicious activity is also advised. Moreover, individuals should refrain from clicking on links in unsolicited emails or texts and only open attachments from trusted sources.

Using strong passwords to secure credit card accounts is another essential step in safeguarding personal information. Lastly, extra caution is advised when engaging with individuals outside the country, as scammers often operate from overseas locations.

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) serves as a valuable resource for individuals who have fallen victim to scams or wish to report suspicious online activities. By visiting the IC3's homepage, victims can file complaints and access information to help combat cybercrime.

As the holiday season approaches, it is vital for Illinois residents to remain vigilant and aware of the various scams targeting unsuspecting individuals. By staying informed, taking necessary precautions, and reporting any suspicious activity, residents can help protect themselves and others from falling victim to scams.
