State Representative Mike Coffey expressed his gratitude to veterans for their service, stating, "Thank you, veterans for your sacrifices to protect the freedom of our great nation. We owe you a debt of gratitude for safeguarding the ideals of our founding fathers and you will always be a pivotal part of our communities."

Coffey announced that his bill, which increases access to college scholarships for children of U.S. military veterans, has passed through the Illinois House of Representatives with bipartisan support. House Bill 4733 expands eligibility for honorary scholarships to include children of veterans who served during the invasion of Panama between December 20, 1989, and January 31, 1990.

"The sacrifices made by our military and their families can never be fully repaid; however, adding Panama conflict/Operation Just Cause to honorary scholarships is one small way we can repay them for their sacrifices," Coffey stated.

Coffey also supports several other pieces of legislation aimed at helping veterans:

- HB2288: Helps expand veteran-owned small businesses.

- HB612: Extends property tax relief for veterans with disabilities, including those from World War II.

- HB3463: Increases the assessed value of a veteran’s property to receive an exemption.

- SB2751: Exempts veterans from building permit fees for improvements related to accommodating their disability.

The State of Illinois offers various programs and resources for veterans and their families. These services cover a wide range of issues at federal, state, and local levels. Coffey's office encourages anyone seeking assistance or information to contact them at 217-782-0053.

"On behalf of all of us, thank you for your service to our country. Our community is grateful for your sacrifice in defense of our freedoms," Coffey added.
