Today on National Airborne Day, the Illinois Air National Guard is being celebrated for its enduring commitment to both state and national defense. Established in 1927, this military reserve unit has evolved from its early days of aerial reconnaissance to playing a critical role in modern national defense and humanitarian missions.
State Representative Wayne Rosenthal of the 108th District exemplifies the leadership qualities fostered by the Illinois Air National Guard. After graduating from Morrisonville High School, Rosenthal joined the Illinois Air National Guard and the United States Air Force. He distinguished himself in Navigator flight training, earning the Husik Memorial Trophy as the top aviator in his class. Accumulating over 3,000 flight hours in the F-4 Phantom, Rosenthal attributes his success to the values learned during his service.
“The values of discipline, service, and commitment I learned in the Illinois Air National Guard are the foundation of everything I’ve done in life,” says Rosenthal. “Whether in the skies or in the legislature, those principles guide me every day.”
Rosenthal's career trajectory reflects these principles. Elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2010, he served until 2015 before becoming Director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Re-elected to represent the 108th District in 2022 for the 103rd General Assembly, he continues to embody service and stewardship.
The history of the Illinois Air National Guard began with its formation as the 108th Observation Squadron at an armory on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Initially comprising World War I veterans tasked with aerial reconnaissance, it has grown into a formidable force over nearly a century.
During World War II, units like the 108th Observation Squadron conducted anti-submarine patrols near strategic locations such as the Panama Canal. Post-war advancements saw new aircraft like KC-135R Stratotanker and C-130H Hercules enhancing their capabilities for air refueling and tactical airlift operations.
Domestically, their role has been pivotal during crises such as The Great Flood of 1993 when they provided essential support through sandbagging levees and medical assistance. Internationally, after September 11 attacks, they supported combat supply missions in Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom and delivered humanitarian aid globally.
“Service isn’t just something you do; it’s who you are,” Rep. Rosenthal emphasized. “The Illinois Air National Guard taught me that, and it’s something I strive to live by every day.”
As we honor these airborne forces today, we acknowledge not only their historical achievements but also their ongoing contributions. Their legacy of resilience and dedication continues to inspire future generations.
