The Illinois College women's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory against Cornell College in a Midwest Conference match held on Tuesday night in Jacksonville, Illinois. This win marked the Lady Blues' improvement to a home record of 5-4-1 for the season.
From the onset, IC's Lauren Sinclair made an impact by dribbling past two Rams players, setting up an attack. Sinclair passed to Erin O'Connell, who then sent a through ball to Stephanie Flores on the right wing. Flores capitalized on this play by scoring just 16 seconds into the match, giving IC an early lead.
Cornell had a chance to equalize in the 17th minute with two shots on goal. However, first-year goalkeeper Sophia Kriegesmann thwarted these attempts with crucial saves. The teams continued their competitive play throughout the first half, maintaining a score of 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, IC initiated four shots on goal within eight minutes. The Rams countered with an offensive push that led to a shot by Kylie Hard, which was again saved by Kriegesmann.
The turning point came in the 74th minute when IC was awarded a penalty kick after Sinclair was fouled in the box. Haley Sommer took advantage of this opportunity and scored IC's final goal of the match. The Lady Blues maintained strong defense for the remainder of the game, securing their fourth shutout victory of the season.
Overall, IC outshot Cornell 16-11, with Sommer leading with seven shots and Abbi Renwick adding three more.
Looking ahead, the Lady Blues are set to face Beloit College on Saturday, October 28 at 11:00 AM for their final match of the season.
