Luther University defeated the Illinois College softball team in a doubleheader, marking a disappointing home opener for the Lady Blues. The non-conference games, held at Kamp Softball Field on Saturday, ended with scores of 11-0 and 13-0 in favor of Luther.
These victories bring Luther's overall record to 15-5, while Illinois College falls to 5-16.
In the first game, Luther's pitchers Olivia Engler and Cyrah Rassmussen were dominant. They limited Illinois College to just one hit over six innings. Engler pitched the initial four innings, allowing only a double by Cheyenne Anderson in the bottom of the second inning. Rassmussen completed the game with two hitless innings.
Cheyenne Anderson's double was Illinois College's only hit in this game. She also recorded a walk and a stolen base. Julia Drake was the losing pitcher for Illinois College, conceding seven runs on eight hits over her four innings.
The second game saw Luther taking control early with seven runs in the top of the first inning. Engler continued her strong performance by shutting out Illinois College on three hits across five innings with two strikeouts. Taylor Henry took the loss for Illinois College, giving up seven runs on five hits.
Illinois College managed three hits in this game: singles by Calynn Gicante, Jaycie Edwards, and Elysia Hand.
Looking ahead, the Lady Blues will begin their Midwest Conference play next Saturday with a doubleheader against Lawrence starting at noon.
