The Illinois College men's soccer team experienced a narrow defeat in the Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals, losing 1-0 to Grinnell College in double overtime. The match took place at England Stadium on Friday afternoon, drawing a record crowd.
Grinnell's victory secures their place in Saturday's championship match against Lake Forest College, who defeated Cornell College 2-0 earlier that day. The winner of this final will advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Illinois College concluded their season with a record of 10-5-3 after winning the Midwest Conference regular season title. Grinnell improved their standing to 9-5-5 with this win.
Throughout regulation and both overtimes, the match remained evenly contested, with both teams creating several scoring opportunities. Goalkeepers Owen Macias of Illinois College and Carter Benson of Grinnell displayed strong performances. However, it was Samuel Gojjam who managed to score for Grinnell at the 101:48 mark during the second overtime, securing their victory.
For Illinois College, Tyler Schiltz led the offensive efforts with four shots, while Jives Efemini and Tyler Lunning each contributed two shots.
