The Illinois College men's soccer team achieved a significant victory against Knox College in their Midwest Conference match on Tuesday night. The Blueboys secured a 5-1 win, improving their conference record to 2-0 and standing at 7-3 overall. This result places them in a first-place tie with Cornell College in the MWC standings.
The match began with Tyler Schiltz intercepting a pass from Knox, allowing Toby Ybarra to score an early goal for Illinois College. Knox equalized in the 36th minute with a free kick by Swen Van der Weijden. However, just before halftime, Eric Espinoza was fouled in the box, leading to Albert Nimako scoring from the penalty spot and giving Illinois College a 2-1 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Illinois College's offense intensified. Reed Rogers scored his fifth goal of the season in the 50th minute. Shortly after, Jives Efemini headed in a corner kick from Rogers for his first goal of the season. Ybarra then scored again in the 55th minute with a shot from outside the 18-yard marker.
Defensively, Brock Kennell, Thomas Menke, and Nimako played crucial roles as Illinois College limited Knox to only five shots throughout the match.
The Blueboys are set to continue their conference play against Grinnell College on Saturday, October 7th at Grinnell, Iowa.
