FOIA Request to Illinois Department of Revenue Regarding Business City Sales Tax on November 13, 2024.

We at Sangamon Sun, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, have formally requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. The request was made for these records to be provided in an electronic format.

The specific information sought includes a list of businesses that paid sales tax to the city from January 1, 2023, to November 1, 2024. We have asked for this list to include several key details about each business. These details are: the name of the business, its address and type, the amount of sales tax it paid to the city during the specified period, and the name of the city where it is located.

As members of the media committed to transparency and accountability in public institutions, we believe access to such public records is crucial for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We also expressed our belief that we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals due to our role in disseminating information.

We await a response from the Illinois Department of Revenue and will keep our readers updated on any developments regarding this request.
