Recently, two officers from the Chatham Police Department responded to a welfare check for an elderly resident who was not answering the door for a Meals on Wheels delivery. The meal delivery worker became concerned when the senior, who lives alone and is handicapped, did not respond.

Upon arrival, the officers found the front door open and saw the senior in his wheelchair. Instead of leaving after confirming his safety, they approached him to ensure he was alright. The senior expressed gratitude for their visit and accepted their offer to have his hot meal delivered again.

During their time with him, the officers learned that he was a Chicago Bears fan and had been financially exploited by his granddaughter’s boyfriend. They informed him about filing a police report to start an investigation.

One officer noticed that the senior lacked a Knox Box—a device that allows emergency services access during emergencies without damaging property. The officers coordinated with the Chatham Fire Department to install one for him that day.

The Chatham Police Department emphasized its commitment to community service: "The Chatham Police Department will continue to go above and beyond for the community we serve." They also highlighted collaboration with local fire services: "We are proud to work with our brothers and sisters in red to take great care of our community, together."
