Over the weekend, the Illinois General Assembly approved the FY26 budget, marking one of the largest in the state's history. The budget amounts to $55.2 billion and includes a nearly $1 billion tax increase. Since Governor Pritzker assumed office, Illinois' budget has expanded by 38%. State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) opposed the budget, citing concerns over its priorities.

"In a time when Illinois families are in dire need of tax relief, the Democrats failed to pass a reasonable budget to serve the best interests of the people of Illinois," Coffey stated. He further criticized Democrat politicians for focusing on raising taxes to fund their own pay raises and special projects in their districts.

Coffey argued that reducing taxes, implementing reasonable energy policies, and cutting bureaucracy on job creators are essential steps to boost Illinois' economy and attract families to the state.

Representative Mike Coffey represents Illinois’ 95th House District, which includes parts of Sangamon County—covering portions of Springfield and Villages of Chatham and Rochester—as well as parts of Macon and Christian Counties.
