Illinois State Representative Coffey has expressed concern over the state's current energy policies, which he claims are driving up costs for consumers. In discussions with community leaders and stakeholders, Coffey pointed out that the shutdown of coal-powered plants and the lack of expansion in nuclear energy have contributed to an energy shortage during times of high demand.
Ameren Illinois has indicated that electric bills for their average customer will increase by about $45 a month this summer. Coffey criticized the Illinois legislature's approach, stating, "The green energy policies supported by Illinois Democrats have led to higher costs for working families."
He urged the state to improve its strategies to keep energy prices affordable, noting that Illinois families are already struggling with the cost of living. "The Illinois legislature needs to take swift action to reform policies that are escalating energy prices and create a better plan that will stabilize our grid," he emphasized.
Coffey further warned about the consequences of not addressing grid stability: “Without grid stability, there is no question that our state will suffer greatly from progressive policies that do not take into consideration the affects they have on everyday Illinoisans.” He called for legislators to utilize all available resources to meet energy demands, warning that failure to act would result in continued price increases for both businesses and residents.
