Yesterday, community leaders and Illinois residents gathered to commemorate the 163rd anniversary of President Lincoln signing the Pacific Railroad Act into law. Union Pacific Railroad marked the occasion by unveiling a new commemorative locomotive at Springfield’s Amtrak station. The locomotive, No. 1616, was showcased as part of the event.

Union Pacific traces its origins to the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862, which authorized the construction of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad. This legislation enabled the company to establish its presence from the Pacific Ocean to Chicago.

The event highlighted President Lincoln's pivotal role in initiating this historic project, cementing his legacy as a founding figure in Union Pacific's history.
