State Representative Charlie Meier of Okawville has chosen to donate his annual pay raise to local community organizations in Southern Illinois. Meier, a Republican, expressed his disapproval of the recent salary increase for lawmakers and decided to redirect his raise to benefit those in need.
“Politicians do not deserve a pay raise at a time when people in my district are struggling because of the reckless government spending,” Meier stated. He attributed the financial difficulties faced by residents to "irresponsible policies coming out of Springfield," which he claims have led to high property taxes, increased energy costs, and a rising cost of living.
Meier voted against the pay raise and emphasized his commitment to supporting his community by donating over $5,000—the amount of the increase—to local organizations providing essential services. “It is an honor to serve my constituents, and I don’t do this for the paycheck. While Chicago Democrats vote to raise their pay, I’ll give it right back to my community,” he added.
The decision underscores Meier's stance on fiscal responsibility and support for Southern Illinois residents amid economic challenges.
