State Representative Charlie Meier (R-Okawville) has criticized Governor J.B. Pritzker’s recent signing of Senate Bill 328, a measure that Meier and other House Republicans argue will increase the number of frivolous lawsuits against Illinois businesses. The legislation was signed into law despite previous calls from House Republicans for a veto, and a lawsuit has been filed to prevent its implementation.

“Governor Pritzker’s decision to enact SB 328 is a huge mistake that will cost Illinois businesses time and money fighting off frivolous lawsuits from cash-hungry trial lawyers,” Rep. Charlie Meier said. “SB 328 doesn’t protect Illinois residents—it penalizes businesses, stifles investment, and fuels a legal climate that welcomes frivolous lawsuits. Governor Pritzker should have vetoed this trial lawyer cash giveaway. Instead, he joined hands with his Democrat trial lawyer buddies and took direct aim at job creation and economic growth in Illinois.”

Meier stated that the new law would raise business costs in the state.

“These costs will be passed on to already cash-strapped working families and consumers,” Rep. Charlie Meier said. “Illinois already stands at a competitive disadvantage with neighboring states that have fairer legal systems and more friendly legal environments.”

A lawsuit challenging the legislative process behind SB 328 has been filed by Republicans against House Speaker Chris Welch and Senate President Don Harmon; it remains pending in Sangamon County Circuit Court.

Meier, who was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 109th House District in 2023 after replacing David Reis, continues to oppose measures he believes harm local businesses.
