Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site will hold its annual candlelight walk event starting October 3, with the event expanded to three weekends in 2025 due to increased interest. Families can attend on October 3-5, October 10-12, and October 17-19. The walks will take place each evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., providing more opportunities for visitors to explore the historic village.

The event allows guests to tour log homes, stores, a tavern, school, gristmill, and other outbuildings illuminated by candle lanterns. Staff and volunteers dressed in period clothing share stories about the original village. Visitors can also enjoy warm apple cider and campfires while learning about life in the 19th century and Abraham Lincoln.

Located near Petersburg in Menard County, about 20 miles northwest of Springfield, Lincoln’s New Salem has been a tradition for many who want to experience history firsthand. The site commemorates Abraham Lincoln’s time in New Salem beginning in 1831 when he arrived via flatboat on the Sangamon River. Lincoln worked several jobs there including store clerk and postmaster, participated in his first election, and was elected to the Illinois State Legislature during his six years in the village.

Rep. Wayne Rosenthal (R-Morrisonville) said, “I encourage families to experience the candlelight walk and embrace the history of President Lincoln. Not only is this event fun and family-friendly, but it is also an opportunity for visitors to learn more about life in the 19th-century.”

Rep. Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) added, “Abraham Lincoln is the greatest President in history, and the candlelight walk really demonstrates how life was in the 1800s. The event is designed for all ages and it’s a great way to learn more about our 16th President and how he lived and worked in the village of New Salem.”

Coffey was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois' 95th House District in 2023, succeeding Tim Butler.
