Each year in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month highlights the impact of breast cancer on individuals and families throughout the United States. In Illinois, the Illinois Department of Public Health estimates that about 12,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually. This underscores the importance of education, early detection, and support for those affected by the disease.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in the country. The American Cancer Society notes that early detection plays a key role in survival, with a five-year survival rate of about 99% when cancer is found early. Regular screenings such as mammograms are recommended to help detect cancer before symptoms appear.

Early detection not only improves survival rates but can also reduce the burden and costs of treatment. Women aged 40 and older are advised to have yearly mammograms, and younger women should discuss their risk factors with healthcare providers. The Illinois Department of Public Health provides resources and programs to support access to screenings, especially for those facing barriers to care.

State Representative Jeff Keicher has supported expanded access to breast cancer screenings in Illinois. As a chief co-sponsor of Public Act 103-0808, enacted in 2024, he has worked to ensure that women have access to screenings without financial obstacles. The law requires insurance companies to cover both Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), addressing previous gaps in coverage that left many without access to MBI. This change aims to help more women detect breast cancer early and improve outcomes.

Rep. Joe Sosnowski, who was elected as a Republican to the Illinois State House in 2011 representing the 69th District (https://ilga.gov/house/Rep.asp?GA=103&MemberID=2972), co-sponsored a House Resolution that designated October 13 as Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day in Illinois. “Metastatic breast cancer, in particular, presents unique challenges, as it represents the stage of the disease where cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body, often making it more difficult to treat,” Rep. Sosnowski said. “As a state we can raise awareness and support continued research in the fight against metastatic breast cancer and, more importantly, honor the strength and resilience of those who have suffered from this disease.”

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, individuals are encouraged to participate in local events, wear pink, or share information about screening options. Organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the American Cancer Society offer information on events and volunteer opportunities. Additional resources are available through programs like the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP) (https://dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/life-stages-populations/womens-health/illinois-breast-and-cervical-cancer-program.html).

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed, efforts continue across Illinois and the nation to educate, support, and advocate for those affected by breast cancer.
