Tax assistance available at Chatham Library

Taxforms

The Chatham, Illinois Area Public Library is hosting volunteers from AARP and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program throughout March and the beginning of April.

Volunteers are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. up until April 16 to help individuals with the preparation of their income tax returns. This service is free of charge for those that qualify; this includes people that make under $54,000 annually, those that have disabilities, individuals with limited English speaking capacity and the elderly.

Individuals that are interested are asked to call Mary Alice Keith at 217-483-2713 in order to schedule an appointment with tax preparation volunteers.

All volunteers participating at the library have been certified by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Volunteers have also been instructed to identify certain areas that individuals would qualify for in terms of tax credits that include education credits and matters associated with the Affordable Care Act.

The IRS website indicates that individuals should have the following items when seeking tax preparation services: identification; Social Security cards for the individual, spouses and dependents; earnings and wage statements; statements from health insurance and proof of a bank account and other documents.
