The Chatham, Illinois Area Public Library will be holding a session on basic genealogy research on March 18.
The course will focus on how to utilize information from the census and website resources that are available to people interested in mapping their family’s genealogy. The course will also cover methods to determine the quality and authenticity of information that is found.
This course will be presented by Co-Chair of the library’s Friends of Genealogy group, Linda McCall. The course is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in the library’s conference room and is scheduled to conclude at 11 a.m.
The Chatham Library offers an obituary database for information within the village and allows searches by the first and last name of the individual and by the date of their death. It also offers access to America’s Genealogy bank that requires the entry of a library card. According to the resources page, this database has approximately 400 years worth of documents and records.
The library also offers links to external resources that include the Illinois State Archives, the state’s Department of Public Health, marriage, birth and death records for Cook County and information from other states and sites that might offer cemetery and burial information.
